Recently, we traded in the comforts of home for an adventure in the English countryside, exploring the charm and magic of the Cotswolds. It was a trip filled with picturesque views, charming pubs, and unforgettable walks through rolling fields and quiet paths. Here’s how we planned it, where we stayed, and, most importantly, how to make your own pub crawl through the Cotswolds one for the books!
This was a trip my sister and I took with our husbands, and it was such a fun adults-only getaway. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for kids unless they’re really into walking and don’t mind spending time at pubs.
The Secret to Walking in the Cotswolds
Did you know that you can walk through farms in the Cotswolds thanks to the “Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000“? This law allows public access to designated footpaths that cross privately owned farmland, including fields with grazing livestock, as long as you stay on the marked paths. Essentially, you can walk through farms but not freely roam across the entire property.
If a trail is marked as accessible, you can walk it—even if it cuts through private farmland. This makes the Cotswolds a walker’s paradise, with countless paths connecting quaint villages, charming pubs, and stunning views.
To make the most of our walks, we used the AllTrails app, which is perfect for planning routes and ensuring you don’t miss any hidden gems. My sister mapped out the most charming pub walk, and it did not disappoint!
Our Cotswolds Pub Crawl Itinerary
We started our day at Bruern Farm Shops for a quick coffee and some snacks to fuel up. We grabbed coffee and snacks, soaking in the cozy atmosphere before setting out. From there, we set off on a journey that felt like stepping into a storybook. Here’s the route we took:
- The King’s Head Inn
- A classic English pub with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a cozy fireplace.
- The Wild Rabbit
- Known for its modern twist on a countryside pub, it’s a perfect spot for a pint and a light bite.
- The Kingham Plough
- A must-visit for its rustic charm and delicious pub fare (our favorite food of the whole trip!)
- The Chequers
- Our final stop on the trail, offering hearty meals and a friendly local vibe.
Each pub had its own unique charm, offering cozy corners that felt like a warm embrace after a brisk walk. Many of the pubs had rooms separated by the most gorgeous curtains—I couldn’t help but wish we had fabric options like those in the U.S.! The journey between them was just as magical, with snow-dusted fields and quiet paths connecting these charming stops. Walking through snow-dusted fields, quiet paths, and tiny villages made the entire day feel like a dream.
The Night Before: Warming Up
To kick things off, we spent the evening before enjoying dinner and drinks at The Bull and The Bell. It was the perfect way to set the tone for our countryside escape. The cozy ambiance and hearty meals left us ready for the adventure ahead.
Where We Stayed
We chose a lovely Airbnb that overlooked a neighboring farm, which was especially magical in the snow. The views were breathtaking, and it was the perfect base for our countryside adventures. Waking up to the sight of snow-covered fields was an experience I’ll never forget.
